Spraying is a pain

Scott says jokingly, “It sure would be nice if I could use our sprayer on my upper pumpkin patch. Having to resort to my pull wagon sprayer is a pain.”  Kidding aside, I don’t think Scott will be growing pumpkins in his upper patch next year.  Scott added an injector system into the misting system in his lower patch – it’s much easier to maintain!

A Tip for You

A tip for you?  If you want your pumpkin to continue growing as big as possible before it halts and begins to ripen, cover it with a tent!  You can buy one for about $25.  Simply cut the bottom out and gently place it over your pumpkin. Zip it almost all the way shut to shelter it from direct sunlight, leaving it open a little bit to allow the heat to escape.

Pumpkin Progress

To date, this is Scott’s fastest growing pumpkin that he has ever grown, picture taken on July 22nd on day 15. This was the last seed he had planted. It was filed and put into a plastic bag on May 3rd and planted in the ground on May 14th. It was the last to get pollinated on July 7th.

July 22nd is day 30 for Scott’s first batch of 3 pumpkins. He is surprised they are all pretty close in size. This one is 120-77-76. OTT is 273 pounds.

Vine Burying

Bury your secondary vines as it encouraging rooting.  As the weather begins to change, and it gets windy out, this will also prevent the vines from twisting and breaking.  You can see Scott’s vine burying in this photo.

Water, Water, Water!

If your leaves look like this, they are too hot.  They need cooling and WATER.  Scott’s 1,177 plant got the brunt of the sun scald when the misting system well ran dry. The misting system went down for about 2 hours during the hottest part of the day and scorched a few leaves. The misting system is now on city water, just using the well for the drip tape.
